Co-organizing "Mapping Methods and Materials," a photo research symposium and summer school

Together with Katrīna Teivāne-Korpa (National Library of Latvia) and Inese Sirica (Art Academy of Latvia), I organized a photo research symposium and summer school “Mapping Materials and Methods: Photographic heritage in cultural and art-historical research.” Riga, Latvia, August 16-20, 2021.

Some highlights of research symposium and summer school “Mapping Methods and Materials” include:

1) Day 1 of the symposium and summer school, August 16: I moderated the symposium with participating speakers Baiba Tetere, Līga Goldberga, and Aigars Lielbārdis, and a special keynote lecture by Maria Garth, Graduate Curatorial Assistant (Dodge Fellow) at the Zimmerli Art Museum, “Issues, Challenges, and Insights: Art Historical Research on Latvian Photography at the Zimmerli Art Museum (USA).” The symposium was live-streamed and recorded at the National Library’s professional recording studio.

2) Day 2 of the symposium and summer school, August 17: I moderated a special keynote lecture by Leila Anne Harris, the Edith Gowin Curatorial Fellow in the Photography Department at the Morgan Library & Museum, “Traveling Pictures & Rough Drafts: Edward S. Curtis and Peter Hujar Collections at the Morgan Library & Museum.”

3) Day 3 of the symposium and summer school, August 18: I gave a lecture “Methods in art and photography history” for the summer school students at the Art Academy of Latvia where I focused on sociology of culture, postcolonial studies, and cultural analytics. Together with the students we read authors such as Pierre Bourdieu, Ariella Azoulay, and Lev Manovich.

4) Day 5 of the the symposium and summer school, August 20: summer school student presentations, instructor evaluations and feedback, and discussions at the National Library of Latvia.
